Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?
I don't post often on this site for 3 basic reasons: (1) A response like the attack on Chuck Neville. Why would anyone subject themselves to such viciousness! (2) The same few people post and their word is like gospel. They usually respond before those of us not living on the computer have the opportunity. And since they appear to know it all, there's no point in additional comments. (3) I have a wealth of knowledge and experience which I am glad to share with those who want to learn. There seems to be a lack of that audience. Judy Waldman JW Yachts

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?

Peter, at the risk of getting slammed for going off topic here, I've opted for the Simrad AP24 because: good reputation for quality/reliability (Raymarine apparently lagging in this respect); middle of the price range (Navman/Northstar at the bottom, Raymarine almost the same, B&G way more expensive); control unit and processor fit perfectly in small space avalailable; wireless remote very important for me; dunno, but there is a chance it will interface with my Navman (now Northstar) GPS chartplotter since I notice my Navman shares a very similar design, user interface, cables, etc. to one particular Simrad plotter currently on market; if I choose to upgrade chartplotter one day, then it will likely be a Simrad so I'm planning ahead for compatibility! Any further questions, I suggest either mail me or we start a new thread.

Judy, you strike me as being someone who can hold their own in a discussion about a subject in which you are experienced.  Don't let them know-it-alls keep you off the board! Most of us here want to learn, and if you know something better than the others, then we want to hear it! Please?! Thanks!

Mark

Patti

With a depressed economy, you should be able to get a very good deal on a boat in the upcoming year. Be patient and dont jump. Be sure its the right boat.

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?

Ralph,

I hope you are right, although, feels like we're taking advantage of folks in bad times; but if they've got to sell, someone is going to purchase, might as well be me....right?  We were preapproved for a boat loan last summer, haven't checked to see if things have changed and I am sure they have with the economy and credit slow down.  Tough times for all.  Thanks for your continued interest and support.

Patti

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?
While I'm belly-aching, another problem with this site is that topics wander far afield from the subject heading. This is not only difficult for those that don't "mix peas and carrots" but makes it impossible to go back to re-read a post of interest. Then usually the posts that continue have nothing to do with the subject heading so I either miss interesting posts or have to read them all without selectivity. Please! Start new topics or research archives and revive an old thread. I wouldn't mind starting a new "belly-aching" thread, but, believe it or not, I don't like to do negatives. Thanks :-) Judy

To lose a luminary like Chuck Neville was sad indeed.

Why is Chuck a luminary?

I normally would not dignify a comment like this with a response, but when someone's name has been impugned I think something needs to be said.

Chuck first came to my attention when some of his work was included in "Voyaging Under Power". His designs were aesthetically pleasing, practical, and followed up with enthusiastic commentary.

I've continued to come across examples of his work, sometimes in PMM (his Katahdin II for example) and elsewhere. All very well thought out designs, some simple and some large and complex. But always having a certain aesthetic.

His ongoing advertisements in PMM ("But then that's just my opinion....") have always given pause for thought, and there is invariably learn something from his words. From time to time he submits technical articles which even I can understand!

When he came on to this site a while back it was in the context of announcing his new steel trawler series. The negative comments about him were embarrassing to say the least. No comments on the validity of his designs; no, the attacks were directed at him personally. Granted, he was here initially to sell his product, but there is a place for that (Classified), so why can't he do that. (Although the board rules did change after that.) Again, if he had stayed here I think we would have had a great resource to call upon for the interesting questions.

Judy, you have chimed in from time to time and have provided meaningful insights; I hope that you will feel encouraged to continue to do so.

But then that's just my opinion....

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?
Conrad,
That is all well and good and thank you for clearing up your statement about him being a luminary. However my comment about my impression of him is no less valid then yours. He was very arrogant and dismissive when I met him, and by the way I would of described myself as a fan of his work prior to that experience. My wife had the same impression. Yes he was treated rudely but the initial response from the board was understandable given the surprise no doubt felt by many of his initial blatant self promotion.

But then that's just my opinion.

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?
I used to frequent this forum daily, but with the technological problems and board's slowness, I left to frequent www.trawlerforum.com. It's a much better site and seems to have more activity than this one now. Also has a lot of the same folks. I hardly ever come over here any longer... PM never seemed to care about how the board worked, just that it was "new and (ahem) improved". I voted with my feet, er, fingers!

Re: Who the heck reads this stuff?
Keith, et al,

I too was once an active participant on the board.  Technical glitches effectively locked me out for months.  After waiting months for a cure I pretty much gave up, especially given that the volume of posting had dropped off the chart.  Just for grins I tried one last time to respond to a post this evening (see radar reflectors), and miracle of miracle my post go through.  I guess I'll start prowling these waters again.  (o;
