Diesel Engine Basics
John MartinoSolomons, MD
08:30 AM - 05:30 PM
Are you a new boat owner interested in getting to know the source that will power your boat? Are you an existing boat owner who needs a refresher on the components of your engine and how to service them? If so, this two-day PassageMaker University course taught by Captain John Martino will give you an introduction to the marine diesel engine, its parts, the service they require, and the confidence to either work on your own engine or talk to the mechanic who will be in your engine room.
The material covered in this course will be applicable to all diesel engines but the course will be taught using a cutaway Universal diesel as well as Yanmar, Westerbeke, and Volvo engines which will give you firsthand experience with the subjects covered. Capt. John Martino will cover principles of operation, anatomy of a diesel engine, how to maintain your diesel engine, and basic troubleshooting you can perform. Regardless of the type of engine in your own boat, the combination of lecture material as well as hands-on practice is designed to provide a transition from a theoretical to a practical understanding of a diesel engine. The course will enable you to understand, troubleshoot, and perform basic preventative maintenance and repairs to your diesel engine. Although this course is not designed to turn boat owners into expert mechanics, you will gain a working knowledge of marine diesels, enhance your understanding of the engine and its components, and have the confidence to know when an experienced mechanic is needed.
