Trawler Fest San Diego, California
February 26 – 28, 2009
A Successful Debut!
The first appearance of our niche boating event on beautiful Shelter Island in San Diego proved to be a tremendous success, with over 1,000 attendees, the majority of whom had never been to a previous Trawler Fest. The Kona Kai Resort, located on the stunning blue waters of Southern California, was the perfect location for our debut in the Golden State. This tropical resort-style hotel, conveniently located near the airport, restaurants, and shops, offered breathtaking views of the marina and downtown San Diego. A perfect location indeed!
PassageMaker University courses kicked off the event and ranged in topics from Women-Only Boat Handling and Seamanship to Ship’s Systems Stem to Stern. A new, half-day course, Diesel Engine 201, was also presented. This unique class, taught by diesel expert Bob Smith, provided a refresher on the theory and maintenance of diesel engines.
Following PMU, Trawler Fest began in full swing. The weather cooperated perfectly and enthusiasm resonated throughout the three-day event, confirming PassageMaker’s decision to host the show in sunny California. The exhibitor hall and marina were filled with interested cruisers checking out the wide variety of boats on display and products and services. Participants eagerly attended the seminars, roundtable discussions, and afternoon demonstrations. A special thank you goes to Captain Michael Elliott for his wonderful storytelling abilities. Captain Elliott, stationed at the local Navy base, graciously donated his time to entertain those lucky folks who attended his special presentation on open-ocean seamanship. And a thank you to our special guest speakers, Steve and Linda Dashew and Tony Fleming, for sharing their many exciting cruising experiences that kept the audience in awe.
The evening festivities were ever-popular, including the Hawaiian luau and lively costume contest. Our congratulations go to Ms. Joni Shoemaker-Geis for her creative Statue of Liberty outfit. (Who knew that Lady Liberty could be fashioned out of a giant pineapple, grass skirt, and candles?)
We are pleased to announce that PassageMaker Magazine’s People’s Choice was awarded to the stately Nordhavn 55, and that over $500 was raised at the silent auction to benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society!
