An armada of PDQ's power cats tackles high winds and rough seas on Lake Ontario, 33 locks on New York's canal system and the mighty Hudson River.

Every once in awhile I get an invitation that is simply too much fun to pass up. I've crossed oceans, made countless coastal passages and done my share of ugly deliveries in awful weather. But I relish going to new places aboard different boats, and even the nastiest trips leave me with the warm glow of satisfaction in hindsight.

"It's Better In The Bahamas," the ads proclaim.

What could be better than warm, clear waters that flash a tropical spectrum of cobalt blues, turquoises, aquamarines and water the color of air. How beautiful!

When I thought about what we wanted on the new Growler, a bulletproof fuel system was at the top of the list. I've been on lots of boats over the years and many of them seemed to tiptoe on the precipice of engine problems caused by fuel issues: water in the fuel, leaks that allow air into the system, rust or junk accumulated on the bottom of a tank or contamination of various kinds that threaten the reliability of the main engine or engines.

Back In The Groove

Boomer lies heavily against my side, pushing me into the side of the hull as she stretches her length across the V-berth. Laurene is quietly rolled up on her side, invisible under the covers, unaffected by our golden retriever's need for continuous physical contact.
