Planing hulls have a bottom shaped to provide additional lift under the amidship and after surfaces as boat speed increases, causing the forward surfaces to lift out of the water and thereby decreasing drag. The after surfaces are typically flatter as opposed to rounded, and may have some V-shape to improve tracking, as well as partial tunnels to help minimize draft.
