Doyles & Hospodars Present The Great Loop and ICW at TrawlerFest-Florida

The Great Loop may keep you close to home, but it can still be challenging. Prepare yourself and your boat with the help of two of the most knowledgeable cruising couples East of the Missisippi.

One of the most accessible cruising adventures keeps you close to home, but proximity does not mean that the popular American Great Loop (which includes the Intracoastal Waterway) is not without its challenges. To help you meet those challenges, we have two couples who “wrote the book” on inland waterways as seminar presenters at TrawlerFest-Florida.

“Loop & Ditch: Planning Your Great Loop and ICW Adventures and Saving Money Under Way” with George and Pat Hospadar and Mark and Diana Doyle is the equivalent of a full-day seminar, but presented over two mornings. Seminar times are Thursday and Friday, Jan. 22-23, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The Hospodars, active cruisers authors of Reflection on America’s Great Loop and The Great Loop Experience from Concept to Completion, and the Doyles, authors of On the Water ChartGuides will team up to present this course for boaters who are seriously considering making the Great Loop journey or just transiting the Atlantic ICW (aka “The Ditch”).

The Hospodars will guide attendees through the important practical considerations that should be made before even undertaking this trip. These topics include: outfitting your boat, route planning, financial, medical, insurance, time-frame, and life-style factors, types of locks and lock safety, Canadian and U.S. Customs, addressing security issues, and much more.

The Doyles will discuss some of their special “secrets” for successfully piloting the waterways, will detail wonderful points of interest and anchorages you will find along the ICW portion of the trip, and will share the locations of their “Frugal Favorites.” That is, budget-friendly town docks, moorings, and marinas.

TrawlerFest-Riviera Beach at the new municipal marina begins on Tuesday, Jan. 20, with seminars and goes through Sunday, Jan. 25. The in-water boat show begins on Thursday, Jan. 22, and runs through Sunday, featuring boats for long-term cruisers and liveaboards.
