Tooling has been completed for a new West Coast trawler for Marshall “Duffy” Duffield, owner of the Duffy Electric Boat Company. He says that the Duffield 58 will burn just 22 gallons per hour at 17 knots.
Duffield, a Californian, looked eastward to Marblehead, Massachusetts, for someone to design a traditional-looking boat but with better-than-traditional fuel efficiency. “My eye caught the name of an East Coast designer named Doug Zurn, founder of Zurn Yacht Designs,” Duffield says. “His boats looked right to me and he emphasized using modern, advanced composite materials for fast cruising and fuel savings.”
Duffield’s vessel will be built in the U.S., incorporating a West Coast-style superstructure, combined with a traditional New England-style hull. The boat will have a narrow waterline beam—a Zurn trademark—and be powered by a single Caterpillar C-18, mounted well aft away from the living space to ensure a quiet ride.
“As we tool up the new Duffield 58 in preparation for her launch, we know that this vessel is going to have a universal appeal. We were able to apply our classic designs to the West Coast style and we love the results,” Zurn said.
The interior centers around the open-plan galley and seating area. The master stateroom is comfortably situated forward, with a queen-size berth and en-suite head and shower. The guest stateroom’s en-suite head and shower will serve as the day-head.
