Legendary Yacht Broker and Grand Banks aficionado, Harold M. “Hal” Jones Jr., passed peacefully at home with family in Texas on December 27, 2013. He was 89 years old.
Memorial Services for Jones will be held on Saturday, February 22 at the Calvary Chapel Boca Campus located at 1551 West Camino Real, Boca Raton, Fla 33486. The service will begin at noon and will offer a light snack to guests afterwards.
Jones began as a yacht broker and established Hal Jones & Co., which became a Grand Banks dealer in 1977. Jones became a well-recognized name representing Grand Banks Yachts in North America and helped to create a tight-knit family within his organization.
Jones even served a stint as Commodore at the Lauderdale Yacht Club, and was an active member in many other marine industry organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Carol; son, Harold M. “Jay” Jones III and so many of his loyal friends and followers who had the opportunity to enjoy Jones' knowledge and passion for boating and friendly conversations, along with the many that reached out to him every day for his knowledge and advice.
“He was a good friend, a ready source of good counsel [and] a mentor,” friend and PassageMaker contributor Milt Baker said in an email. “One lesson he taught me I’ll never forget: Never fall in love with a boat you don’t already own. Hal was an icon in the trawler world of the 1980s and ’90s, and I miss him already.”
